Now is the time to think about Windows 10
You might have heard that Microsoft is providing users running Windows 7 and 8.1 a free upgrade to its latest Windows 10 operating system. This offer will expire on 29 July 2016, making now the time to think about whether or not you want to make the move to Microsoft’s latest and greatest.
Microsoft says Windows 10 will be its last major version of Windows, with it being updated regularly through Windows update. Over time, Microsoft will make improvements and introduce new features to the system – keeping it fresh. Windows 7 and 8.1 only have a limited lifespan – support for the latest processors (such as Intel’s Core i-6000 series) will end in July next year, with official end of support ending in 2020 and 2023 respectively. If you have purchased a computer in the last six months or so and are running Windows 7 or 8.1, you have until July next year to upgrade to Windows 10.
Support for Windows 7 on all other hardware ends in January 202o, with Windows 8.1 ending January 2023.
Why upgrade to Windows 10?
In our experience, a computer running Windows 8.1 that has been updated to Windows 10 will feel faster not only while performing tasks but also in starting up and shutting down.
If you are using Windows 8.1, the Start Menu has returned in Windows 10 – merging the Windows 8.1 start screen into a more user-friendly start menu.
You can display tiles in the start menu – showing latest information from a variety of sources (think of widgets on your Android phone).
There are now multiple desktops, allowing you to switch between virtual screens where you have only one monitor.
Has better cloud support than previous versions of Windows.
Is more secure than previous versions of Windows.
Why wouldn’t I upgrade to Windows 10?
If your computer isn’t compatible or is known to have issues with Windows 10. This can be checked with the Get Windows 10 app in the notification area (the Windows icon down near your clock) and selecting Check Update Status.
Will I lose anything when I update?
Windows 10 can do an in-place upgrade which will keep your data in tact when you upgrade.
